Devil's Slide Tunnel Project-West Alignment

The State of California, Department of Transportation (Caltrans) held the grand opening for the newly christened Tom Lantos Tunnels on March 25, 2013. The tunnels were constructed to replace the California Highway Route 1 located along the Devil’s Slide area between the City of Pacifica and Montara. Caltrans requested that the District provide water service to the Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) on the south side of the tunnels, to public water fountains, for landscaping, and for use in the fire suppression system built into the tunnels. The District constructed, and will maintain and operate the new water pipelines.

There still remains additional work to relocate a gas and sewer line and to lay some asphalt at Shamrock Ranch.

Finally, a small recirculation pump station will be installed for the new water pipeline located at the bottom of Highway 1 in Pacifica. This pump station will ensure that the water never goes stagnant in case of disuse or simply low usage, which will maintain the District’s water quality at all times.
